Partition masonry · Baku, Azerbaijan

A partition block built from what Baku already throws away.

RenewBlocks combines shredded plastic, incinerator ash, and limestone quarry dust with cement into a lightweight, non-load-bearing masonry block — cured with CO2 gas instead of water.

Stage: TRL4 — lab formula validated, full-scale block not yet produced. Pilot site: Sumgait, Azerbaijan.

Three waste streams

What goes into a block

Every block starts with material that already exists nearby, with nowhere useful to go.

Shredded HDPE/PP plastic

Pre-sorted plastic bales, sorted by resin code and dry-shredded on site.

Incinerator bottom ash

Leftover ash from municipal waste-to-energy processing, weathered outdoors before use.

Limestone quarry dust

Fine dust from local limestone quarrying — a byproduct the quarry otherwise pays to dispose of.

Combined with cement, a small amount of microsilica, and cellulose pulp, then pressed and cured with CO2 gas. See the full process.

Where the numbers stand

We label every figure by how sure we are of it.

Some of this is measured in the lab. Some is a target we're still building toward. We don't blur the two — see the full breakdown on the technology page.

Calculated

~12.3 kg

Target block weight, vs. ~28 kg for a standard stone block. Not yet weighed off the press.

Measured

9.0 MPa

28-day compressive strength on a solid 160×40×40mm lab specimen — not the full hollow block.

Target

>5.0 MPa

24-hour CO2-cure strength target for the commercial block, net area. Not yet measured.

Calculated

~85.8 t

Plastic, ash, and limestone dust diverted per 10,000 blocks. To be confirmed at production scale.

Calculated

~3.5 t

CO2 mineralized into solid mineral per 10,000 blocks — a stoichiometric estimate, not yet measured.

Reference

4.14 MPa

ASTM C129-17 minimum for non-load-bearing block — shown for scale, not a claim of certification.
